Skylarks and Sun Dried Tomato Pate I'm not expecting any awards for this title! However, we had a beautiful May day last Monday (the last one this year), and I was out walking in the hills around Kentmere in the Eastern Lakes with two friends and Dylan the Dog. Sometimes it's nice just to go for a walk without too much to distract you from the views, and under blue skies filled with skylarks, the little hills of Yoke, Ill Bell, Froswick, High Street and Harter Fell were ideal. This is no advertising spiel, but for lunch, we stopped against the drystone wall that runs across crest of High Street. All I needed was half a jar of Etna Preserves fantastic sun-dried tomato pate, half a Finnochio salami from Gelli, and some slices of Devonshire Bakery Spelt Bread. Just perfect. Or it would have been had not Dylan stolen some of it!
Maestro Gelli and his Fantastic Salami You say Salume, I say Salami.... however you spell it, cured sausages are usually a disappointing experience here in Cheshire. That's why we were so thrilled to received a large box of samples from Tuscany last week. Made by Gelli (that's the business run by Signor Gelli, in his eighties now, and his two daughters), they are a revelation. The Wild Boar Salami is soft and sweet and completely delicious; the Napoli is equally soft but so well spiced with Chilli and Paprika that it puts Chorizo in the shade; and the Finocchiona, a fine salami made with wild fennel seeds, is absolutely unbelievable. We also have Wild Boar Sausages and Flat Pancetta from the same house in stock - come in and find out what you've been missing all these years! We guarantee that it's the best, freshest and tastiest salami in all of Cheshire! :-)
